Kenguru: A Car for Drivers in a Wheel Chair
Until lately, wheel chair users were relegated to the back seat of a van, or had to buy incredibly expensive vehicles with many modifications. That is all changing and and better mobility is becoming a reality for many disabled people.
Kenguru Services, a Hungarian company, designed the Kenguru (Hungarian for “kangaroo” and pronounced the same)- the first wheel chair user driven car – about a decade ago. The auto design was spotted by Texas lawyer Stacy Zoern (a wheelchair user herself) who setup Community Cars. Zoern’s company now manufacturers Kengurus in Pflugerville, TX.
Cost will be about $25,000. Visit Kenguru online for more info.
According to PVA magazine, “The Kenguru has received a positive and strong response at trade shows around the world.” Community Cars has logged about six hundred orders so far.
The pitch is simple and alluring:
The KENGURU® gives you the independence you have been looking for! Whether it is commuting to and from work, visiting family and relatives, or just meeting up with some friends to have fun, the KENGURU® will help you to do it on your own.
