Let’s Not Allow This Autistic Girl to Spend Another Birthday Alone
A picture speaks a thousand words. This single photo of a young woman from Maine sitting alone at her own birthday party last year went viral on June 7.
The 18-year-old’s cousin, Rebecca Lyn, is the one who posted the image to Facebook. She described her cousin Hallee as a “beautiful young woman, both inside and out,” and she’s asking the world to help celebrate Hallee’s upcoming 19th birthday (this July) by sending her a birthday card.
“Hallee is an amazing person — a person I am proud to be related to. She is also a person who just happens to have Autism. She has never let that small detail define who she is as a person — which is why I refuse to use it as something to describe her.”
Rebecca continues to say, “Last year, when Hallee was turning 18, she was ‘so excited’ to have a party with her friends. She wanted to go bowling, have fun, and eat cake and ice cream. Invitations went out to her classmates at school and to other friends in the area.”
But, as this heartbreaking photo suggests, Hallee was left alone on her special day, “anxiously” waiting for her friends to arrive. “But Hallee’s friends would never arrive. Not a single one,” Rebecca wrote. She addressed the attached photo, explaining that it was a photo of Hallee eating her birthday cake all by herself.
“My cousin is a beautiful young woman who will always have the mind of a child, so as you can imagine, she was heartbroken and beyond sad. She was hurt.”
Rebecca is asking everyone for a favor, to help flood Hallee’s mailbox with birthday cards from all over. Rebecca said Hallee loves getting mail and it would be the best birthday gift she could ask for. Send Hallee a birthday card at:
