Tortoise Gets A New 3D Shell After a Fire
Freddy is a tortoise from Brazil. Last year there was a huge forest fire that burnt her shell very badly. Freddy survived 45 days without food before she was found by a volunteer group called the Animal Avengers.
Freddy also suffered through two bouts of pneumonia. She was in bad shape, having lost 85% of her shell.
The Avengers group had a 3D designer as a member and they were able to reconstruct a shell for her. It was difficult because of the severe damage but they were able to do the reconstruction using over 40 photos of other (healthy) tortoises.
The design was printed out using a desktop 3D printer in four individual, jigsaw-like puzzle pieces that fit together around Freddy to make one complete shell.
Each 3D piece took 50 hours to print!
Then came the aesthetics. Brazilian artist Yuri Caldera to create something that would look natural.
Freddy is healthy now and happily living with one of his Animal Avenger rescuers.
